In this workshop, participants can discover how fabrics and papers are made light-sensitive with the help of environmentally friendly iron salts, and then how deep blue images are created with the help of sunlight and water. The workshop teaches the basics of the cyanotype process. Participants learn the technique in a playful setting and can then create their own cyanotypes at home. The workshop is suitable for families with children from the age of six; no previous knowledge is required.

Participants will learn how the cyanotype process can be extended and manipulated by including additional natural substances. With lemon, coffee, spices or tea, many other shades can be created from the typical cyan blue. The workshop allows you to discover surprising chemical reactions of these substances beyond the basic processes and is aimed at anyone interested in making their own cyanotypes using natural materials and local conditions. The workshop is suitable for adults and young people aged 12 and over. Previous experience is not necessary; prior participation in one of the introductory workshops is possible but not required.

The project Reallabor für erneuerbare Fotografie was launched to explore how to act in a resource-saving and ecological way in photography. Through the artistic work of Carolin Lange & Dico Kruijsse, we will discuss how to use processes and materials that interthink ecological cycles and art production. The different roles of artists, curators, institutions and the audience will be brought into the discussion in order to outline possible common perspectives and actions.
Discussion partners: Cale Garrido, Carolin Lange & Dico Kruijsse, Nicolas Reinhart, Christoph Wieland
Date: 09.06.2023, 6 to 7:30 pm
Location: Spinelli grounds, Campuspavillon
